What types of damages may one seek after a car accident?

A car accident can change the course of an Ohio resident's life. Not only may they have serious injuries to recover from, but also they may find that they are unable to get back to living the life they had prior to becoming the victim of a violent vehicle crash. When a person suffers loses due to the negligence or recklessness of another person, they may be entitled to seek their damages through legal channels in the civil courts.

Damages are the losses that a person incurs when they are hurt by another person. There are different types of damages one can seek depending upon the harm they suffer. One form of damages that individuals can often seek, through the courts and from the parties who hurt them is actual damages.

Actual damages are also called compensatory damages. These damages refer to the financial losses that an individual suffers when they are harmed. They can include but are not limited to lost wages, medical bills and property damage.

Another form of damages that a person may suffer is noneconomic damages. Noneconomic damages cannot be quantified, like medical costs or wages lost to time off from work. These damages cover the pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment and other nonmonetary losses that a person may experience when they are involved as a victim in a car crash. There are limits on how much money a person can receive in the form of noneconomic damages.

Finally, a person may seek punitive damages in a car accident case. Punitive damages are only available if the responsible party acted with intention or recklessness when they caused the accident. To better understand what damages a person may seek after suffering losses in a car accident, Ohio residents should contact their local personal injury attorneys.
